Made in Michigan, sold and serviced on the lakeshore
Four model families, widths from 5 feet to 8.5 feet, and lengths up to 31 feet, and it is the line we stock most deeply. Buyers come to the Zeeland lot from across Holland and the lakeshore, and plenty of what leaves here is headed down US-31 or around the lake toward Chicago, Milwaukee and northern Indiana, so we keep the sizes that travel well.
Start with what you are hauling
Darkhorse makes four families and they overlap on size, which is why picking by length alone tends to go wrong. Start from the load and the answer usually falls out.
Hauling general cargo: the DHW
The wedge nose, and Darkhorse calls it their best seller. It runs from a 5x8 single axle up to an 8.5x24 tandem, with single axles covering 5 to 7 feet wide and tandems taking over from 7 feet. The sloped front is not styling for its own sake, it takes some of the drag out of a long highway run. Standard is a one-piece aluminum roof, .030 exterior metal, tube framing, three-quarter inch performance flooring, LED lighting throughout and rubberized coating on the tongue and bumpers.
Wanting maximum box for the length: the DHF
Same trailer, flat front. Because the nose is square you get usable space right to the front wall, which matters if you are loading long material. Widths run 6 to 8.5 feet and lengths 10 to 24 feet. Single axle goes up to the 6.5x14, and anything 7 feet or wider is tandem. Brakes come standard on every tandem and on the 6.5x14, optional below that. The build is the same underneath: three-quarter inch floor, 6mm plywood walls, one-piece aluminum roof, automotive-grade undercoating, four recessed 5,000 lb D-rings and a three-year limited warranty.
Working out of it every day: the DWRK
This is the trades trailer. Seven configurations from 7x14 to 8.5x24, all tandem axle with a 4 inch drop. The TA35 builds carry 7,000 lb GVWR and the TA52 builds go to 9,990 lb. Floor crossmembers are on 16 inch centers rather than 24, walls are 3/8 inch plywood, and it ships with four recessed 5,000 lb D-rings and a breakaway battery for the brakes. Undercoating and rubberized armor coating are standard, which is the right call for a trailer that sits outside through a lakeshore winter.
Hauling sleds or side-by-sides: the DSTT
Sport, track and trail. This is the long one, eleven configurations from 7.5x19 up to 8.5x31. Interior width is 86 inches on the 7.5 foot models and 96 inches on the 8.5 foot models, with interior lengths from 18.5 to 30.5 feet. All tandem axle, electric brakes standard, rated 7,000 lb to 9,990 lb depending on build. It comes with a 36 inch RV side door, a rear ramp door and nine flush-mount D-rings, and the D-ring count is the thing to look at when you are strapping down two or three machines.
Reading the 1500, 2500 and 3500 badges
The number is the trim level. It mostly describes how tightly the frame is spaced, and what comes fitted rather than optional.
| Series | What changes |
|---|---|
| 1500 | Standard build. Tube framing on 24 inch spacing, aluminum trim, three-quarter inch flooring, LED lighting. |
| 2500 | Framing tightens to 16 inch spacing. Adds stabilizer jacks, upgraded door options and a semi-screwless exterior. |
| 3500 | Six extra inches of height, giving 78 inches inside. Reinforced 16 inch spacing throughout, rear spoiler, dual LED dome lights with loading lights, and a heavier double-tube ramp door. |
Rule of thumb: daily loading and unloading justifies the 16 inch spacing on a 2500 or 3500. Weekend use rarely does, and the 1500 holds up fine.
Warranty, and what comes as standard
Every line carries a three-year limited warranty, and LED lighting, automotive-grade undercoating and recessed D-rings are fitted as standard rather than sold as options. With the factory in White Pigeon, a warranty question or a replacement part is usually a phone call and a short wait rather than a month of chasing a plant several states south. And if nothing in the catalogue is right, Darkhorse will build to order.
