Start with what rides on it

Most utility trailer decisions around Holland come down to three kinds of load.

Home and cottage. A mower, bikes, kayaks, yard waste or a load from the cabin. A 5x8, 6x10 or 6x12 handles this without a second thought, and a single axle keeps it light behind a half-ton or an SUV.

Landscape crews. Room for a second machine and a walkway beside it usually means an 82-inch-wide deck, which is where the 8x14, 8x16 and 8x20 models sit. Our guide to the best utility trailer for lakeshore landscapers goes through sizing a crew trailer in detail.

Hardscape and equipment. Once the load is pallets of pavers or a skid steer, the weight rating matters more than the length. Look at the 7,000 lb and higher ratings, or at our equipment trailers.

Steel or aluminum near the lake

Steel utility trailers, like the Sure-Trac line, cost less and take a beating. Aluminum trailers, like Sport Haven, cost more but weigh less, and they will not rust the way bare steel does when they sit near the water or through a salted winter. Galvanized steel sits between the two, and we carry Diamond C as well.

The weight difference is real cargo. On a 6x12 rated at 2,990 lb, an aluminum deck weighing about 700 lb leaves roughly 2,290 lb for the load. A steel 6x12 at 1,100 to 1,300 lb leaves roughly 1,700 to 1,900 lb.

Check the rating before you load

Every listing shows the trailer's GVWR, the most it is allowed to weigh loaded, and each detail page shows its empty weight. The gap between the two is your cargo limit, and it has to cover everything: machines, fuel cans, a spreader, the straps. Many smaller utility trailers are rated at 2,990 lb, so that gap is smaller than people expect.

Each listing carries its own price. If budget is the constraint, the used trailers that come in on trade are worth watching, and for a one-off job we also rent landscape and utility trailers by the day or the weekend.

Our east-side store often stocks units we do not, including galvanized utility trailers alongside painted steel. Grandville Trailer near Grand Rapids may have the one you want.

Utility Trailer FAQs

Often, if the deck is wide enough and the rating covers it. Measure the machine at its widest point and compare it with the deck width between the rails, not the overall trailer width. Then check its weight, plus anything carried on it, against the trailer's GVWR minus its empty weight.

For a house and a mower, a 5x8, 6x10 or 6x12 is usually plenty. Crews hauling two machines want the extra foot of a 7x14 or an 82-inch deck, and hardscape loads push you to an 8x16 or 8x20 with a higher rating.

It comes down to size, weight rating and whether the deck is steel or aluminum, so each trailer on this page lists its own price. Aluminum costs more than steel of the same size, and going to two axles adds to it again.

Used units come in on trade and move quickly. Whatever is on the lot in Zeeland today sits on our used trailers page, which is worth checking before you settle on new.

Yes. The rental fleet at the Zeeland lot includes landscape trailers with open or solid sides, along with enclosed cargo and car haulers, at daily, weekend, weekly and monthly rates.

Aluminum, in most cases, because it does not rust the way bare steel does. Painted steel lasts well too if chips are touched up and the trailer is rinsed after salted roads. Galvanized steel is the middle ground if you want steel with more protection.

Check tire pressure and look for cracked sidewalls, test every light, and listen for noisy wheel bearings on the first tow. Look over the coupler, the safety chains and the ramp gate hinges. Ten minutes in the driveway beats a problem on US-31.

Your owner's manual lists the towing capacity, and the hitch and ball are each stamped with a rating. Add the trailer's empty weight to everything you plan to load, and keep the total under whichever rating is smallest.

Measure the overall length, not just the deck. The tongue adds several feet to the listed deck length. Check the gate or driveway you will back through, and the spot where the trailer will sit between jobs.
